Bricklayers in Battle

Brickwork for an old ridge-top town

Bradford Brickwork repairs, repoints and builds brickwork for homeowners in and around Battle. Jobs run from a single cracked lintel or a leaning garden wall to the brickwork for a porch or an extension. We also repoint and rebuild chimney stacks, and we supply the bricks, blocks and mortar.

Battle stretches along a High Weald ridge, and many of its older houses mix brick with clay tile-hanging or render. When we repair a house like this, we match the brick, the mortar colour and the bond, so the new work sits quietly beside the old.

Builders in Battle

Builders in Battle, East Sussex

Few places in England carry as much history as Battle. The town grew up around Battle Abbey, built on the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, and its High Street is lined with historic buildings. Bradford Brickwork works as builders in Battle and the surrounding Rother countryside, taking on extensions, new builds, repointing and lintel work.

Building in a historic town

Battle’s centre is a mix of timber-framed, tile-hung and brick buildings from many centuries, with Victorian and later housing spread along the roads leading out of town. Beyond the edges sit farmhouses, cottages and newer homes across the High Weald. Older brickwork here deserves care, and any change to a property should respect the character around it.

Bricklayers and building contractors around Battle

In a town with this much history, finding a bricklayer in Battle who respects older brickwork matters. We cover Battle and its surrounding area for house extensions, new builds and repairs, working as building contractors across this corner of East Sussex.

Common building jobs in Battle

01

Adding a room to a country home

Detached houses and cottages outside the town often have space to extend. We build the extension and tie it into the house.

02

Weather-worn joints on an old elevation

On older properties the mortar can wear back over decades. Repointing renews the joints so the wall looks and performs better.

03

A lintel that needs replacing

Cracks over a window, or a sagging brick arch, may mean the support has failed. We replace lintels and window supports.

Local building character

Clay tile, red brick and refaced timber frames

The centre of Battle became a conservation area in 1971. Almost every building on High Street, Mount Street, Upper Lake and Lower Lake dates from the 1700s or earlier. The council describes a typical front as tile-hung upstairs over a brick ground floor or shopfront, with a roof of handmade clay tiles.

Many of these buildings are older than they look. The town did well from the iron industry in the 1600s and 1700s, and lots of houses were altered or refaced then. On the High Street, medieval timber-framed buildings were given a brick or stone skin with a parapet wall in front of the roof. These are often the rendered fronts you see today.

Each street has its own look. Upper Lake has simple Georgian-faced terraces in painted, rendered or bare brick, while Mount Street is known for white weatherboarding. Lower Lake is later, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces in rich red brick and front doors up short steps from low retaining walls. Behind the High Street, many long gardens end in a high wall of mellowed old brick.

Because the centre is a conservation area, some work that would normally be allowed needs planning permission here, including most outside changes such as extensions. Check with Rother District Council before work starts.

Repointing to gable and chimney.

A great job repointing the gable and chimney. Some of the bricks to the chimney needed replacing too. This was the second time of using Bradford Brickwork and as before we were very impressed. All work was completed on time despite a sudden downpour and the result looks great. Thanks very much!

Garden and patio redesign

Matt was able to discuss our patio and garden plans with us and and put them in to reality.
The end result is everything we had hoped for, we're really pleased with the result. We now have an eye-catching low maintenance garden.

We also had the house wall repointed.

Brick soldier course for lintel above window

Looked at pics and assessed the job, came to quote. Saw that it was urgent, as my replacement window couldn’t be fitted as the lintel was close to collapse. Matt booked in the job for the next day and 2 of his guys did the work. All very professional.

FAQs

Brickwork and building questions from Battle

Do I need planning permission for an extension in central Battle?

You may. The centre of Battle is a conservation area, and there planning permission is needed for some work that would otherwise be permitted development, including most outside changes such as extensions. Check with Rother District Council before work starts.

Can you match the old red brick on Lower Lake?

Yes. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces on Lower Lake are built in rich red brick. We match the brick, the mortar colour and the bond, and we can source reclaimed bricks where new ones would look too bright.

My High Street building has a brick front on an old timber frame. Can you repair the brickwork?

Often, yes. Many High Street buildings are medieval timber frames that were refaced with brick in the 1700s or 1800s. We look at the wall on a free site visit, check whether the building is listed and make sure any consent is in place before we start.

How far is Battle from you?

We are based in Maresfield, East Sussex, about 21 miles from Battle by road. We also cover Whatlington, Catsfield, Mountfield and Crowhurst.

Do you cover villages around Battle?

Battle is part of our service area. Get in touch with your address and we will confirm whether we can help.

What services do you offer?

Residential building, commercial building, brick repointing and structural work on lintels and window supports.

Why do old brick walls lose their mortar?

Rain, wind and frost slowly erode mortar over the decades, and joints on older buildings were never designed to last forever. When the joints recede or crumble, the wall becomes more open to water.

Do you work as builders in Battle, not just bricklayers?

Yes. As builders in Battle we build house extensions and new builds, take on commercial work and replace lintels and window supports, as well as all the brickwork on this page.
