Foundations
Why foundations matter
Foundations spread the weight of your building into the ground. If they’re too shallow, poorly designed or built on unsuitable soil, you’ll see cracking, movement and expensive problems later. Sussex has a mix of clay, chalk and sandy ground, and each behaves differently. We dig and pour foundations to suit the ground conditions and your engineer’s specification.
Foundations
Types of foundation
Strip foundations
The most common type for extensions and houses.
Trench fill foundations
Trenches filled with concrete, ideal where speed and stability matter.
Raft foundations
A reinforced slab for weaker ground or lighter structures.
Pad foundations
Supporting columns, piers and steel structures.

Garden and patio redesign
Matt was able to discuss our patio and garden plans with us and and put them in to reality.
The end result is everything we had hoped for, we're really pleased with the result. We now have an eye-catching low maintenance garden.
We also had the house wall repointed.
Superb Brickwork, Highly Recommended
The brickwork on our new‑build barn‑annex, including the chimney stack and a one‑metre perimeter wall, was completed to a superb standard. The team kept the site consistently tidy, worked with real pride, and showed genuine passion for the craft. Everyone was polite, respectful, and easy to deal with, making the whole process smooth from start to finish. Highly recommended for reliable, quality brickwork.
Patio extension
Matt and his fab team recently extended my patio. It was just what I had in mind - the slabs matched perfectly and shingle was added by the fence so it matched existing work. They also tidied up like nothing ever happened. Amazing. Would highly recommend. Thank you!
Stunning new garden
Amazing experience with this friendly, considerate and highly skilled team. We had a new wall, fence, patio and artificial grass laid. The results are even better than we hope. Would highly recommend Bradford Brickwork.
Shorten garden wall and make good driveway
Matt and his team did a very good job of putting right a job previously carried out by a non qualified brick layer.
The job is now completed to a very high standard and everything was left clean and tidy. The team were polite and courteous at all times. We would highly recommend .
Repointing house wall
We needed one wall of our house repointed, but we also needed the ridge tiles replaced as well as the roof verges.
Matt was very knowledgeable and the brickie he supplied was really good and very helpful. Nathan went above and beyond.
They were really easy to get on with and did a superlative job.
I would thoroughly recommend and definitely use them again, if the need arises.
Definitely 20 stars !!
Repointing
This was our first experience of having a wall repointed, but we needn't have worried. The team were friendly, polite and professional. Communication was good and they arrived and completed on time.
They did a great job and the wall looks great. I would certainly use Bradford Brickwork again.

FAQs
Foundations FAQs
How deep do foundations need to be?
It depends on ground conditions, nearby trees and the load. Typically at least 1 metre, and deeper on clay soils near trees. Your engineer and Building Control will confirm.
Do foundations need inspecting?
Yes. Building Control inspects the trenches before the concrete is poured. We arrange this as part of the job.
